Happy Canada Day

What do moose, moving trucks, and maple leaves have in common?

They all show up on July 1st — Canada Day!

Although it was originally called Dominion Day until 1982, this holiday marks the Confederation of Canada, which took place on July 1, 1867, uniting Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada under the British North America Act (now the Constitution Act).

Beyond the iconic maple leaf, you’ll often see Canada Day decorations featuring the beaver (our national animal) and the moose (just for fun). It’s also a day that invites reflection: many Indigenous communities across the country observe it differently, highlighting stories of resilience, colonization, and cultural strength through their own events and gatherings.

And while Canada Day is a statutory holiday nationwide, some provinces mark it with their own unique traditions:
• In Newfoundland and Labrador, July 1st is also Memorial Day, honouring those lost in the Battle of the Somme during WWI.
• In Quebec, it’s famously known as Moving Day, when thousands of leases end and families relocate across the province.

At LWT Communications, we’re proud to be headquartered in a country that values inclusion, diversity, and international collaboration. Canada’s multilingual and multicultural identity reflects the heart of what we do — connecting people through language and fostering understanding across borders.

🍁 Wishing everyone a joyful, respectful, and meaningful Canada Day!
